Finance Review: May 2021

Uno Reverse on my savings vs. spendings rate this month…laughing but crying.jpg

Taxes, a vacation, and having fun with friends conspired to wipe out 85% of my income this month. I don’t regret any of it, not even the taxes so take that, financial anxiety!

Spendings Report: $3,387

Most of it was the taxes as predicted last month. Leisure took up a huge portion as well because I went to Luoyang (the oldest of the 4 Chinese Capital cities). I continue to test the limits of my immune system by eating everything I find. It’s only a matter of time before my stomach’s strength exceeds all known limits.

Had a wisdom tooth pulled out so that was some $$$, but it was literally 1/5th of the cost of doing it in Canada so might just do the other one(s) while I’m here. You can’t get cavities if you don’t have any teeth, right?

Net Worth Update: $165, 520

The hedonistic treadmill is real. 3 years ago, I would be super proud if I saved $1500 in a month, but I felt this month I saved nothing at all. I need to keep it in check because I don’t want to derive my happiness based on what my spreadsheet is telling me.

Side note: exchange rates can really mess up these calculations. I lost a few hundred in changing RMB into CAD and close to a thousand in net worth just because the rate was worse by 0.16CAD since the last time I sent money home. I could have waited but didn’t want to play the waiting game.

Still on track to crack $170k by the end of this school year (August) and anything above that I’ll use to travel and buy my little cousins gifts when I see them.
